Packaging sourcing
Corrugated, Rigid and Paper Box Manufacturers in India: How to Compare
Choose between corrugated boxes, rigid boxes, mono cartons and specialty paperboard packaging using product weight, board, print, finish and transit needs.

Which type of box should you source?
Corrugated boxes are primarily selected for protection and transit. Rigid boxes are used when presentation and structural feel matter. Folding or mono cartons suit lightweight retail packs, while SBS, duplex and other paperboards serve different printing, stiffness and cost requirements.
The product weight, fragility, stacking, route to market, moisture exposure and unboxing requirement should decide the construction. A visually similar box may perform very differently when the board, flute, grain direction or internal fit changes.
Specifications to include in your enquiry
- Internal box dimensions and dimension order.
- Packed product weight and whether the box is primary, secondary or transit packaging.
- Board type, ply or flute requirement where known.
- Printing process, artwork coverage and colour reference.
- Finish such as matte or gloss lamination, foil, embossing or windowing.
- Insert, partition, lock, handle or closure requirements.
- Quantity, packing method and delivery city.
How to compare corrugated-box quotations
Confirm whether each quote uses the same internal dimensions, board construction, paper GSM or burst/edge-crush requirement, joint and print coverage. Ask how many boxes are bundled and whether freight assumes flat or erected dispatch.
For ecommerce or industrial transit, evaluate the packed product under realistic stacking and handling. A lower unit price can be misleading if board strength, moisture resistance or usable internal size differs.
How to compare rigid and printed cartons
For rigid boxes and premium paperboard packs, approve the greyboard or paperboard thickness, wrap material, colour proof, finish, insert and closure. Ask for a physical production-quality sample when colour, fit or presentation is commercially important.
Clarify whether printing plates, dies, foil blocks and samples are included or billed separately, and whether those tools can be reused for repeat orders.
A practical first-order approach
- Shortlist manufacturers that already make the relevant box construction.
- Issue one common specification and request comparable price breaks.
- Approve artwork and a packed sample before volume production.
- Document tolerances, inspection method, packing and rejection handling in the purchase order.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 5-ply corrugated box always stronger than a 3-ply box?
Not automatically for every use. Strength also depends on paper quality, flute combination, construction, dimensions, moisture and the packed load. Compare performance against the same test requirement.
What is a mono carton?
A mono carton is a printed folding carton made from a single paperboard structure, commonly used for retail packaging. Its board, print, coating and closure should match the packed product.
Should box dimensions be internal or external?
State which convention you are using. Internal dimensions are usually more useful for product fit, while external dimensions affect shipping and palletisation.
